The water can be raised or lowered to any level, depending on the goal of the session. Deeper water may be used early in rehabilitation cases to provide more buoyancy and less stress on tendon and ligament injuries, while a conditioning patient may benefit from a lower water level that promotes full range of motion of the joints and greater proprioceptive awareness.
The in-ground design adds safety by giving horses a safe exit up the ramp, and it promotes full range of motion through the back and topline by allowing a natural head carriage.
